Where does a "Conde Hermanos" come from?

Note the distinctive half-moon head: “cabeza de media luna” which characterized the top range of the Esteso guitars.

world famous luthiers of classical and flamenco guitars:

Conde Hermanos guitars are played by many professional flamenco players, having acquired a certain prestige and gypsy sound. However there can be appreciable differences and a buyer should be aware that not all "Condes Hermanos" are equal. The reason is simply how the family behind the "Conde Hermanos" evolved.

The Conde dynasty began with Domingo Esteso (1882-1937), who established his own shop around 1915. Domingo Esteso set about training his nephews Faustino and Mariano Conde (senior), and later Julio Conde learned the trade in his brothers' workshop. All three brothers then continued to work for Esteso's widow until her death in 1960 as "Viuda y Sobrinos de Esteso". From 1960 until around 1988/89 they called themselves "Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso Conde Hermanos" and later "Hermanos Conde Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso".

They acquired a good reputation for building guitars, using quality materials and applying rigorous manufacturing techniques to produce the best concert sound. Consequently their guitars began to be used by famous guitarists such as Manolo de Huelva, Niño Ricardo, Melchor de Marchena, Mario Escudero, Sabicas, Rafael Riqueni, Paco de Lucía among others.

The family guitar workshop from the 1920s was situated in calle Gravina Nº 7 Madrid, which remained open until after Uncle Faustino died in 1988.

However in 1980 Mariano Conde (senior) established his own shop close to the Teatro Real, as "Conde Hermanos Sucesores Sobrinos de Esteso". This was in the Calle Felipe V, 2 in Madrid. His own two sons, (Felipe, born 1957 and Mariano (junior), born 1959) began their apprenticeship with their father as well as their Uncle Faustino when they were about 15 years old.

Mariano (senior) died in 1989, and Felipe and Mariano Conde (sons of Mariano Conde senior) continued to make flamenco guitars in their workshop in the Calle Felipe V, 2 in Madrid.

Felipe Conde has a workshop as Conde Hermanos-Esteso near the metro station: Opera in Madrid.

flamenco guitar Jeromino Peña Fernandez

1973 Jeromino Peña Fernandez. Cypress back and sides with pegs.

well played and a very flamenco sound. It is ornate as is the style of Peña Fernandez and has a slightly thicker fingerboard than you would expect nowadays. It has the characteristic handcarved head with pegs (well fitting) and good treble sound. There is a patch of missing varnish on the back of the fingerboard around the 10th fret, otherwise just a few scratches from normal wear and tear. Manolo Sanlucar likes playing these guitars.
